A KVM screen is static almost all the time, so frame rate barely competes with sharpness.

Keeps the encoder from softening static content to save bandwidth you are not short of. Long keyframe interval, because P-frames on a still screen are nearly free.

Video that respects pixels

H.264 decoded in hardware with correct colour. Lanczos resampling to exact device pixels, and a Pixel Perfect mode that sizes the window so one source pixel is one screen pixel.

Keys the host would steal

Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-Tab, Alt-F4, Cmd-Q and Spaces go to the target. On Mac, choose Local, Send App Shortcuts, or capture system shortcuts too. One chord always gives control back.

Power and virtual media

ATX power, force-off and reset with confirmation. Attach an ISO as a CD-ROM or writable USB drive with upload progress. Sixteen EDID presets for the display the target thinks it has.

A library, not a bookmark

Favourites, groups, search and a quick switcher. Several devices connected at once, each with its own saved console layout, scaling, pointer mode and bandwidth policy.

Macros and special keys

Editable key sequences with delays and clean modifier release. A Send Special Keys menu grouped by target OS. Paste types your clipboard through the keyboard, slowly when a BIOS needs it.

Read the screen, prove the link

Select a region of the frame and copy its text with on-device OCR. A statistics overlay, Test Connection self-check and redacted diagnostics show whether a setting actually changed anything.

On iPad and iPhone, Trackpad mode moves the cursor relatively so your finger never covers the target, and Direct mode maps touch position straight through. Two-finger tap right-clicks, two-finger drag scrolls, long-press-then-drag holds the button. Pinch to zoom, pan locally, and type with an integrated remote keyboard.

you might wonder.

Which KVM devices work with it?

GL.iNet Comet is the primary backend; Comet PoE and Comet Pro share its protocol and await model-specific checks. PiKVM, JetKVM, NanoKVM and NanoKVM Pro adapters are implemented against each project’s source and are labelled experimental until hardware checks are recorded. The compatibility page lists what each backend supports.

Does it work over a VPN or from outside my network?

Yes, over any route that reaches the device: a site-to-site VPN, Tailscale, WireGuard or a routed subnet. The app never uses a vendor cloud, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to relay through.

Why can’t I copy text from the remote computer?

A hardware KVM sees an HDMI signal and pretends to be a USB keyboard. The target does not know it is being remoted, so no client can read its clipboard. KVM Remote sends text by typing it, and can read text on screen with on-device OCR instead.

How does it handle the self-signed certificate?

It pins the certificate on first connection and refuses to connect if it changes later, which only happens after a factory reset or reflash. Settings → Security shows the fingerprint and can forget it. Certificate validation is stronger than a browser’s “proceed anyway”, not weaker.

Will it ever look as crisp as VNC?

Not quite on coloured text. The device encodes 4:2:0 chroma, so colour is stored at half resolution and syntax highlighting keeps slightly soft edges at any bitrate. Sharp Text and Pixel Perfect close most of the gap. Read the guide for why.

Which devices will it run on?

KVM Remote is being prepared for the Mac App Store and the App Store for iPhone and iPad. It requires macOS 14 or later, or iOS and iPadOS 17 or later. Capturing system shortcuts is Mac-only and needs Accessibility permission.
